When I complained to a friend of mine about all the 'mistakes' I was making during service in the zendo, she suggested that the ‘mistakes’ might be a result of me not being present in the zendo.
I looked at her like she was crazy.
“Are you kidding me? There is no one, no one who is more present in the zendo than I am. I spend my entire time in the zendo watching everyone else, thinking about the forms, trying to get it right. I couldn’t possibly be more present in the zendo!”
She looked at me and smiled. “Huh,” she said. “So you’re being really present during service… ”
“Yes!” I responded with absolute annoyance.
“So,” she continued. “Being present; that means thinking, analyzing, trying to get it right?”
I looked at her.
I had nothing to say.
