A funny thing happened earlier this week. We were going on a field trip so I had to make a bag lunch for myself. This meant that I was going to take longer to get ready in the morning than I normally do. But I decided to let go of that and just do what needed to be done. So, as my oatmeal was cooking, instead of putting away the dishes (something that did not need to be done) I made my bagel and cream cheese instead (something that definitely needed to be done). Then I went on with my regular routine: ate my oatmeal and juice, poured my tea into my thermos, and started to do the dishes.
And guess what? After you do the dishes, you need to put them in the dish rack. So guess what suddenly needed to be done? Yep, that's right, those dishes that did not need to be put away suddenly did need to be put away.
And I guess that's what they mean when they say being present in the moment and doing what needs to be done. It's always changing. I can't tell you what needs to be done for the future because I don't know what the future is but I can be present to the future when it becomes the present. Oooo- that was a little too zen for me. I guess it just felt like a really clear example of the whole being present in the moment, knowing that things are going to change, and that what needs to be done is dependent upon the moment that you're in right now.
And yes, I ended up being "late" because I had to make my lunch and put away the dishes but that's life, right?
